Problem
MicroStation and Tablet PC's.
Solution
We've tested out MicroStation (as well as Bentley PowerDraft, Bentley Redline, and Bentley View) running on TabletPCs that have the minimum recommended system requirements and have not noticed any obvious problems (other vertical products are also being tested on TabletPCs).
Note that in the 2004 Edition of these products, there is a new user preference (under Input > Click Sensitivity) that you can set to Pen, which optimizes use on TabletPCs.

Minimum Profile
The minimum recommended workstation profile for running MicroStation V8 XM Edition is:
Processor
Intel® or AMD® processor 3.0 GHz or greater
Memory
256MB minimum, 512 MB recommended. More memory will almost always improve performance, particularly when working with larger models.
Hard Disk
900MB free disk space (which includes the 400MB install footprint for a complete installation)
Video
Graphics Card supported by DirectX 9.0. See graphics card manufacturer for latest information on DirectX drivers. If no graphics card supported by DirectX can be found, MicroStation will attempt to use software emulation under Windows XP SP2. At least 128 MB of video RAM is recommended. For optimal performance, graphics display color depth should be set to 24-bit or higher. When using a color depth setting of 16-bit, some inconsistencies will be noted.

V8i SS1.
Product: MicroStation V8i
Version: 08.11.07.443
Area: Installation, Problem ID#: 62317, PROBLEMSOLVING
Solution
This is correct, MicroStation V8i SS2 or later, will "update" the current
active install of V8i (if after 08.11.05.17).
Notes:
- Uninstall is not required.
- It will not attempt to install over older versions of MicroStation
before MicroStation V8i.
- If there is desire to have multiple versions of the same series of
MicroStation on the same machine, it is possible to do so using a
"Virtual Machine".

Where can I find the installation log for my Bentley product?
Product: | MicroStation
Version: | 08.11.09.459
Environment: | N\A | ||
Area: | Installation | ||
Subarea: | General |
Problem
Where can I find installation log file after installing MicroStation?
Solution
The name of this file is called BentleyInstallationlLog.log.
This log file contains information about all the actions and analysis performed by the installation setup wizard. It also saves the installation commands used to install the application. In case of any error in the installation, it stores the error code. This file is common for all the Bentley products. Each time a Bentley application is installed, this log file is appended with the content of the application.
When you install the application, its installation log is created. This log is saved in a new folder created inside C:\Users\User.Name\AppData\Local\Temp. The name of the new folder is randomly generated, such as E32830B5-3516-489D-AE49-EB1BD8A10867. If you execute the installation multiple times, the latest log can be taken from the last modified/created folder.
Providing these logs to Bentley can be helpful to troubleshoot installation errors and issues.

Problem
Random Folder Names that are created under All Users and the Local User
Profile. Why?
Random Folder Names are used when installing MicroStation XM.
There are 2 locations in which these folders are created:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\Bentley\MicroStation\8.9
AND
C:\Documents and Settings\"user name"\Local Settings\Application
Data\Bentley\MicroStation\8.9
Product: MicroStation V8 XM Edition
Version: 08.09.01.20
Area: Installation
Solution
The folder names are created during the Installation of MicroStation XM.
The names allow for multiple versions of XM to be installed on a single
workstation so that Data is not overwritten or inadvertently used by
another version of MicroStation XM.

Can I Import a model created with ContextCapture, Acute3D (*.3mx format) inside MicroStation?
Applies To | |||
Product(s): | MicroStation
Version(s): | 10.00.00.25
Environment: | N\A | ||
Area: | Interchange | ||
Subarea: | Acute3D | ||
Original Author: | Maria Munoz
Background
Can I import a model created with context capture (*.3mx format) inside MicroStation? It is possible in MicroStation CONNECT Edition only, not in previous versions.
Steps to Accomplish
Option 1:
To reference original 3mx format: The workflow is the same as referencing any other supported file format, only choose from available format 3mx. The referenced data are displayed as read-only in full detail in MicroStation.
Option 2:
To attach 3mx data to DGN file directly: It can be done using key-in and it's equivalent to referencing 3mx data and merging the reference into DGN model. If attached directly, you can drop the Acute3D mesh into normal MicroStation mesh and to modify it using MicroStation tools.
MRMESH ATTACH <URL or filename> | Used to attach an Acute3D model directly to the current design file. An Acute3D model URL or filename can be included as part of the key-in. If none is included then a file open dialog is opened to allow a file to be located interactively. A single data point is required to locate the model origin. |
MRMESH GEOATTACH <URL or filename> | Used to attach an geo-graphically located Acute3D model directly to the current design file. An Acute3D model URL or filename can be included as part of the key-in. If none is included then a file open dialog is opened to allow a file to be located interactively. The active model geographic coordinate system will be set to match the geographic system of the Acute3D model. |
MRMESH UNCLIP | Used to remove all clippings applied to the selected Acute3D model through fence clip operations. |
Note: For more information, check Acute3D Files Support chapter in Home > Setting Up the Environment > Using DWG and Other File Formats > Exchanging Data Using Other File Formats in MicroStation help.
You can directly open or reference Acute3D models by selecting the Scene file. The model components (.mx3b) are read internally and must be accessible.

Data exchange btw MicroStation and Autodesk 3ds Max
Applies To | |||
Product(s): | MicroStation
Version(s): | 08.11.09.459
Environment: | N/A | ||
Area: | Interchange | ||
Subarea: | 3DS | ||
Original Author: | Alessandra Fugazzi, Bentley Technical Support Group
Problem Description
Is it possible to import/open directly .MAX file format in MicroStation?
Steps to Resolve
3ds Max saves scenes to a proprietary binary format with the extension .MAX, which means that MAX is its native file extension. It contains all the data related to the Scene and extra ones such as, for example, radiosity values and stacked modifiers. The .MAX file format is proprietary and not published. It is therefore not possible to use this format outside of 3ds Max itself.
Some data of the .MAX file format cannot be extracted because they depend on the plug-in data used to build the scene itself. However, it is possible to extract basic data such as mesh vertices positions, mapping coordinates and othersthrough the 3DS file format which is used to import/export files created in 3ds Max to/from other programs. Some extra data such as stack and editability, and all radiosity will be lost.
In Microstation it is possible to import 3DS format files (File>Import>CAD Files). In many cases, however, using the FBX file format or OBJ file format would be a better import/export option. The FBX format isone of the main 3D exchange formats as it is the common format to get data between Autodesk applications.
The OBJ file format is a text file format which means that the geometry is saved to a ASCII file which can be edited with any text editor. The FBX file format can also be saved in ASCII format. Both binary FBX files and ASCII FBX files use the .fbx filename extension.
