Multiline behaviour with merged references

We often use multilines with background colour in dgn references. No problem so far. When exporting to DWG I usually merge the referenced file with the master file by saving as DGN file with "merge references" and so forth. After merging those multilines that are cut by the reference borders don't have any background colour and are broken up into individual lines. This has been the case for many years from at least SS2. Is there any way to prevent this and keeping the background colour other than breaking up all multilines before merging, hence creating another inbetween step and file?

Since Connect 4 some of the elements in the multiline change their layer name even if the original layer name is present in the merged file. If I assign the correct multiline style to the merged multilines all is fine. But why does Microstation change them at all when merging? Is this caused by that multiline style not being stored in the master file but only in the referenced file?
