Background

This is a basic overview of what configuration changes have been made within MicroStation CONNECT Edition.

Configuration changes in MicroStation CONNECT Edition

Please note that the following is intended as an overview of the installation and configuration changes in MicroStation CONNECT Edition 10.00.00.25 compared to previous versions as well as any future releases.

Further information is available in the delivered help under:

Home> What's New?> New and Changed in MicroStation> Configuration

Please be sure to consult your site administrator of any changes being made to the configuration, as this may result in unwanted issues. I would also backup any original files and track changes being made (this will make it easier to undo any changes made if issues arise).

The previous Workspace System folder now with the product

In previous versions of MicroStation, the System folder and its subfolders and files, were delivered under the Workspace folder structure and contained Bentley delivered configuration files. This created problems, when CAD Administrators moved the Workspace folder and its subfolders and files, to a networked location.

This would normally work, but if changes were made to the System folder or its files between versions of the product, this created problems. So to solve this issue, CONNECT has now moved this folder, its subfolders and files to a folder named “Default” and it is now a subfolder of the product folder MicroStation (…\MicroStation\Default…).

This folder, subfolders and files should not be modified and should only contain the Bentley delivered configuration files.

Additional configuration levels added

There have been additional configuration levels added to CONNECT:

Further explanation of these can be found in the delivered help:

Home>Setting Up the Environment>Configuration>Configuration Concepts

Some of the terminology that has changed

·       Workspace is now Configuration

·       Site is now Organization

·       Project is now Workset

·       User now really means User

·       Worksets are now organized under a Workspace

Further explanation of this can be found in the delivered help:

Home>What's New?>New and Changed in MicroStation>Configuration

Folder comparison and variable name changes

Below is a comparison of the delivered directory structure and some of the configuration variables that are most commonly worked with:

     V8i                                                  CONNECT Edition

NOTE: Pre-CONNECT Edition variables have line thru them and the variable listed below is what the CONNECT Edition is replacing it with.

_USTN_WORKSPACEROOT has been re-purposed

_USTN_WORKSPACEROOT is now used to define the root directory of a specific Workspace:

Some new key configuration variables

Here are some of the new configuration variables and their resulting folders in the new directory structure:

Something to be aware of with the new variables is the similarity between two sets of variables:

·       _USTN_WORKSPACEROOT and _USTN_WORKSPACESROOT      (notice the extra “S”)

·       _USTN_WORKSETROOT and _USTN_WORKSETSROOT                  (notice the extra “S”)

Further explanation of this can be found in the delivered help:

Home>What's New?>New and Changed in MicroStation>Configuration

Installation wizard has changed

In the new install wizard there has been a change. This change will now allow modifications to a few variables during the install process. When this is selected and set, an additional file gets generated and these changes are put in this file (WorkSpaceInstalledSetup.cfg). It is located in the same Configuration folder as the WorkSpaceSetup.cfg. While the _USTN_CONFIGURATION variable can be used, in most cases it will not be needed.

This new workflow is an attempt to minimize the amount of editing needed to redirect the product to an existing non-default configuration.

Convert Multiple Arcs to Lines

$

I have shapes made of multiple line and arc segments.  I need to eliminate all arcs from these shapes, converting them to line segments.

The Facet Curve tool is inadequate.  There doesn't seem to be a way to have the degree of curvature be the factor which sets the line segment length.  For example, say I have 50 arcs, all with a radius of 100 ft, which vary in length from 10 ft long to 500 ft long.  It is inefficient treat these 50 variable length arcs one at a time using the Facet Curve tool and manually selecting the number of segments every time.  If you try to do them all at once, at maybe a number of 100, your 500 ft long arcs would work out well resulting in 5 ft long line segments, but your 10 ft long arcs would be ridiculous with a new line every 0.1 ft.

I thought maybe there was an answer in dropping the linestyle, but in order to do that the line would have to have breaks instead of being continuous.  I tried converting to a dashed line, then dropping the linestyle.  But when I tried to reconnect all the line segments, I could not find an efficient way to do that either.

Please assist.  Thanks.

Working in 3D

Background

Can I import a model created with context capture (*.3mx format) inside MicroStation? It is possible in MicroStation CONNECT Edition only, not in previous versions.

Steps to Accomplish

Option 1:

To reference original 3mx format: The workflow is the same as referencing any other supported file format, only choose from available format 3mx. The referenced data are displayed as read-only in full detail in MicroStation.

Option 2:

To attach 3mx data to DGN file directly: It can be done using key-in and it's equivalent to referencing 3mx data and merging the reference into DGN model. If attached directly, you can drop the Acute3D mesh into normal MicroStation mesh and to modify it using MicroStation tools.

MRMESH ATTACH <URL or filename>Used to attach an Acute3D model directly to the current design file. An Acute3D model URL or filename can be included as part of the key-in. If none is included then a file open dialog is opened to allow a file to be located interactively. A single data point is required to locate the model origin.
MRMESH GEOATTACH <URL or filename>Used to attach an geo-graphically located Acute3D model directly to the current design file. An Acute3D model URL or filename can be included as part of the key-in. If none is included then a file open dialog is opened to allow a file to be located interactively. The active model geographic coordinate system will be set to match the geographic system of the Acute3D model.
MRMESH UNCLIPUsed to remove all clippings applied to the selected Acute3D model through fence clip operations.

Note: For more information, check Acute3D Files Support chapter in Home > Setting Up the Environment > Using DWG and Other File Formats > Exchanging Data Using Other File Formats in MicroStation help.

Problem Description

Hows to import x,y,z points from a text or CSV format file specifying either the use of labels or text at those imported positions.

Steps to Accomplish

1. Open a 3D file

2. Use the Tool XYZ Text\Import coordinates

Note: Available from Tool Menu\Tool boxes

3. Select import coordinates
4. Press Browse and navigate to the directory where we have the text file with the coordinates

Note: The format must be something like what is shown in the image below (X, Y, Z coordinates). If you file has just X and Y values, you need to add a value to Z, for example Z=0

5. Select this file and then press process
This will introduce the coordinates (points).
I recommend to change the active line weight and also color to make them more easily visible.

6. To introduce the labels or Text you need to use the application pltpnt.ma
You can download it from here
7. Save it in the default directory  C:\Program Files (x86)\Bentley\MicroStation V8i (SELECTseries)\MicroStation\mdlapps
8. Go to Utilities menu\ MDL applicacions
9. Select Browse button and select pltpnt.ma

This will launch a dialog like this

10. You can use the default values or change the color and Xoffset, Yoffset or just select the file directly

Note: this text file needs to has the following format (label name or text with blank spaces and,x,y,z)

this will introduce the labels or text

How to configure/add grid shift files in CONNECT edition

$

 Applies To

 Product(s):MicroStation
 Version(s):10.00.00.25
 Environment: N\A
 Area: Coordinate Systems
 Subarea: Geographic
 Original Author:Alain Robert

Background

The way to configure/add grid shift files in CONNECT edition has changed significantly as a result of major CSMAP library changes. Now it is possible to override any datum definition by adding uncommented entries in a user override file.

Steps to Accomplish

Provided with MicroStation in the GeoCoordinateData directory you will notice the presence of a file called UserOverrideGeodeticTransformSeed.asc. The beginning comments explain how to create a file that must be named UserOverrideGeodeticTransform.asc to which you must add the required override entry.

The seed file contains commented all entries that currently make use of grid shift files. It is possible to simply copy the current entry to be modified to the new UserOverrideGeodeticTransform.asc file and uncomment then modify the entry.

For illustration purposes the entry below is the definition of the ED50-IGN.ES datum transformation as delivered with MS CONNECT modified to add a new file. If new files must be added simply add a GRID_FILE line pointing to the new file as the NEW_USER_FILE that was added. Any number of files can be added an as usual former entries have precedence over later entries.

See the file UserOverrideGeodeticTransformSeed.asc for additional details.

Steps to Accomplish

The Facet Curve tool inside Curves tool or Curve Utility tools can achieve this.

Facet to provides different options: Line strings, arcs, point, etc

You can also key in: drop curve

to get the Facet Curve Tool

Note: To get more accurate results increase the "Number" value in the Facet Curve tool.

This value represents the number of segments used to approximate the curve.
