Can't Open DXF files in Microstation or AutoCAD

Hi,

We get DXF files over that have been created in AutoCAD and in theory we should be able to open them in Microstation but 5% of the files that are sent over we can't seem to open in either.

I have tried to open in AutoCAD, Fusion 360 and Microstation but to no avail. I have also tried to add the file as a reference but that won't work either.

The error that comes up in Mircostation is 'Unable to open design file. Please contact your local site administrator or technical support provider for further assistance.' and it just crashes AutoCAD.

We can, however, open in it in QGIS, but can't extract the co-ordinates.

I have gone through every forum I can find but can't get any of the solutions to work.

Versions are:

Microstation - Microstation V8i (Select Series 3) [8.11.9.357]

AutoCAD - AutoCAD 2018

How to solve the Program not Responding Error issue?

Hello,

I have an issue, last day when I was using the system it stops working or freezes for sometimes. The message of "Program Not Responding" appears on the screen. I restart the pc and uninstall the unwanted software programs and then again reinstall the software. But still, the system shows this message again and again. what should i do to solve this issue? should i have to visit Program not Responding Error for the solution?

To view the codes of a particular DWG file, open it within Notepad or other text editor program. The first text in the file is the code.

CE U8 - Analyze cleanup don't distinguishes elements with fill on or off

Hi,

We continue to get duplicates where shouldn't be any (works the same in v8i).

1 - Draw a rectangle, a shape, a circle, whatever;

2 - Copy the rectangle (or your element) to the exact same location;

3 - Change one of the elements to get a fill shape;

4 - Run the Analyze\Design File Cleanup\General\Cleanup Actions with Select mode;

5 - Check the result.

I believe this analyze should take in consideration if the shapes have fill or not.

I don't want to get a positive result if I need two elements, one for the boundary and another for the actual fill.

Create drawing as one single entity

Microstation V8i (SELECTseries 2). I have a drawing in 2D that consists of multiple elements. I want to have the whole drawing as one entity so i can copy the drawing and paste it elsewhere as one drawing. Your help is appreciated.

upside-down text placement

Problem

Why is the Relative toggle missing from the Place Active Cell tool in MicroStation CONNECT Edition?

Solution

This capability for cell placement is an old concept and is in relation to using level numbers in your DGN files rather than level names. Level numbers are something that was replaced as a concept when the V8 series and DGN file format was initially released. The previous V7 DGN format was rejigged so it did not need to rely on a limited amount of levels or naming of those levels. So it was decided to remove the "Relative" option, in the CONNECT Edition, from the Place Active Cell tool to limit the availability but not to stop this capability from being performed as it is still required if V7 DGN file format is in use.

To be able to use this option from MicroStation CONNECT Edition you will have to use the key-in that will still be available in future versions.

PLACE CELL RELATIVE

The following detail supplied in the V8i help documentation may assist in explaining why this toggle was originally used.

Relative

Point cells are always placed on the Active Level.

But if the active cell is a graphic cell and Relative is:

  • On — the Number of the level(s) on which elements in the graphic cell resided when the cell was created determine the level(s) on which the graphic cell is placed, as follows:

    • The graphic cell is placed on a level(s) relative to the Active Level's number. For example, consider a graphic cell that was created with elements on levels with the numbers 5, 7, and 8. If the Active Level's number is 1, the cell is placed on levels with the numbers 1, 3, and 4. If the Active Level's number is 45, the cell is placed on levels with the numbers 45, 47, and 48.

    • However, if the graphic cell has elements on any level whose number is not an attribute of a level in the DGN file, the placement operation fails.

  • Off — the Name of the level(s) on which elements in the graphic cell resided when the cell was created determine the level(s) on which the graphic cell is placed, as follows:

    • If the graphic cell elements reside on a level, and a level with the same name exists in the DGN file, the elements in the graphic cell on that level are placed on the corresponding level in the DGN file, even if the level settings are not the same.

    • If a level with the same name does not exist in the DGN file, the level is copied from the cell library into the DGN file. However, any elements in the graphic cell on the Default level in the cell library are placed on the Active Level.

Configuration Explorer is not showing any installed CONNECT applications

Problem

When launching the Bentley Configuration Explorer the Process Configuration dialog opens but it is not showing any applications to choose from despite various CONNECT applications being installed.

Solution

To resolve this close the Process Configuration dialog and load the required applications using the Configuration Explorer dialog with the following steps :

1. On the Configuration Explorer dialog select 'Tools' followed by 'Application Manager'.

2. On the Application Manager dialog select 'Add' to choose from a list of available installed CONNECT Edition applications. Alternatively, drag & drop the applications shortcut from the Windows Start menu.

3. Choose the application (ie. MicroStation CONNECT Edition) from the available list and select 'Add'. If required hold the CTRL key down to select multiple applications or add them individually later.

4. Select 'OK' on the Application Manager dialog when done adding applications

5. From the Configuration Explorer dialog select 'Process' to reopen the Process Configuration dialog and the Application(s) selected earlier should now be available.

How to select orphan cells (cells without name)? Selectby allows to select cells by name but not cells without name as leaving cellname empty it finds all cells.
